This research simulation, or a suggested research scenario, is designed to provide (1) context with the directions of how to use VideoNot.es and (2) practice opportunties related to visual methodology, in particular visual ethnography. Please follow the following steps (there is also a 12-minute video in the Resources page that can help guide you through the research process):

1. Read the following research question:

As a research participant, what is your experience

of viewing news reports of other cultures (in this case,

North Korea) as portrayed by online media?

In order to answer this research question, you will watch three, separate YouTube videos of news reports about the relationship between the United States and North Korea. Two of the videos originate from English-speaking countries outside of the United States, while one is a U.S. news report. While you are watching each of the videos, you will annotate the videos by typing your experience of viewing each video.

2. Follow the Instructions for video annotation as seen in the diagram to the left.

"ETHNOGRAPHIC INQUIRY [...] seeks to uncover meaning and perceptions on the part of the people participating in the research, viewing these understandings against the backdrop of the people's overall worldview or 'culture'"  (Crotty, 1998, p. 7).

There are three YouTube URLs for the study. You will copy and paste one URL at a time into VideoNot.es for annotation. Note: Participants may annotate multiple videos within a same document by changing the video after one is done; however, as an initial practice, I would recommend having them annotate one video at a time. You will have three, separate annotations to share with the researcher (either myself or another researcher using this tutorial). Please share with UFBrendaRLee@gmail.com, or the gmail address provided by the researcher using this tutorial.
